Noise, smell or lost power

The exhaust shop part of the job

An exhaust does three things: it gets hot gas away from the engine, it quiets it, and it cleans it. When one of those stops working you usually hear about it first, and the noise tells us a great deal about where to look before the car is even on the lift.

Most exhaust work is smaller than people expect. A rusted section can be cut out and welded, a hanger is minutes, and a heat shield rattle costs almost nothing to fix. The expensive part is the catalytic converter, and that is exactly the part we will not replace without measuring first.

We work on the whole run, from the manifold back: welding, sections, mufflers, flex joints, hangers and converters, on cars, trucks and 4x4s.

If you can smell exhaust inside the car, treat that as urgent rather than annoying. That is carbon monoxide, and it is the one exhaust fault we will always look at the same day.

What the noise is telling us

Six sounds and what they usually mean

What you noticeUsually meansWhat we do about it
A deep roar that got louder over weeks
A rusted-through muffler or a hole in a pipe.
We put it on the lift and find the hole. Often it is a section rather than the whole system, and a section is a weld.
A rattle under the floor at idle
A broken hanger, a loose heat shield, or the internals of a catalytic converter breaking up.
Heat shields and hangers are quick fixes. We check the converter before assuming the worst.
Ticking that follows engine speed, loudest cold
An exhaust manifold leak or a cracked flex joint.
It is easy to mistake for a valve. We find the leak with the engine cold, when it is loudest.
A hiss or puffing under the hood
A gasket leak at the manifold or a cracked downpipe.
Left alone this gets into the cabin, so we treat it as a safety item rather than a noise complaint.
Lost power and poor economy, no noise
A clogged catalytic converter, or a lazy oxygen sensor.
We measure backpressure rather than replacing a converter on a guess; they are expensive to get wrong.
A smell of exhaust inside the car
A leak ahead of the cabin, or a failed seal.
Drive with the windows down and book it. Exhaust in the cabin is carbon monoxide.

What we work on

From the manifold back

Muffler

Quiets the pulses leaving the engine. Rusts from the inside out because it collects condensation on short trips, which is why the first sign is often a rattle rather than a roar.

Pipes and flex joints

Carry the gas from the manifold back. The flex joint takes engine movement; when it tears you get a ticking under load that sounds like a valve.

Catalytic converter

Converts the harmful part of the exhaust. Fails by clogging, by rattling internally, or by being stolen. A clogged one strangles the engine and shows up as lost power.

Oxygen sensors

Tell the engine what the mixture is doing. A lazy sensor costs fuel economy long before it turns a light on, and it is a common reason a car fails an emissions inspection.

Hangers and brackets

Hold the whole thing off the floor pan. A broken hanger is the usual cause of a buzz you only hear at one speed.

Manifold and gaskets

Where the exhaust starts. A leak here is loudest cold and often quietens as metal expands, which is why it is easy to dismiss.

Weld, replace a part, or replace the system

Three answers, and when each is the right one

Weld a section

The usual answer

  • Cheapest where the rest of the system is sound
  • Right for a single hole or a failed joint
  • Done same day in most cases
  • Not worth it on a system that is rusty end to end

Replace a component

Muffler, pipe or converter

  • Right when one part has failed and the rest has life
  • Direct-fit parts where they exist, fabricated where they do not
  • Keeps the cost on the part that actually failed
  • We show you the old part

Replace the system

Last resort

  • Only when rust has taken the whole run
  • Makes sense on a car you are keeping
  • We will tell you honestly when it is not worth it
  • Quoted before anything is cut

How we find it

Four steps on the lift

  1. 1
    Listen with it running

Cold first, because manifold and flex-joint leaks are loudest before the metal expands and closes up.

  2. 2
    Lift and look

Rust, holes, broken hangers, loose shields and the condition of the joints, with the whole run checked rather than the noisy end.

  3. 3
    Measure if needed

Backpressure if the complaint is lost power, and sensor data if a code is involved.

  4. 4
    Show you and quote

You see the hole or the broken hanger, then you get the figure before anything is cut.

I needed a simple brake service, but I did not expect these guys work in the 21st century environment. They communicated with me via detailed text messages, and kept me involved in all decision-making.

Gary G. · KRP Franklin

Came here for brake pads and rotors. Got a good price, and they did a good job. They did a road test also.

Nitin C. · KRP Clifton

Great service, they got me in same day for full brakes front and back. Definitely recommend.

Exhaust noise overlaps with other systems. A rattle that only happens over bumps is often suspension, and lost power with a light on belongs with diagnostics before it belongs here.

Got Questions?

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to some of the questions KRP Automotive customers ask most. Still not sure? Give us a call, we’re happy to help.

How much does a muffler repair cost?

Far less than most people expect when the rest of the system is sound. A single rusted section or a failed joint is usually a weld, and a broken hanger is minutes. We put it on the lift, show you the hole, and quote before anything is cut.

Can you weld my exhaust instead of replacing it?

Usually, yes, and it is the first thing we look at. Welding a section is the cheapest honest answer when the rest of the run still has life in it. We will tell you plainly when rust has taken enough of the system that welding is throwing money at it.

Why is my car suddenly loud?

A deep roar that built up over weeks is almost always a rusted-through muffler or a hole in a pipe. A noise that appeared overnight is more often a broken hanger or a cracked joint. Both are found on the lift in a few minutes.

Do I need a new catalytic converter if my check engine light is on?

Not necessarily, and this is where people get overcharged. A catalyst efficiency code can come from an exhaust leak ahead of the sensor, a lazy oxygen sensor or an engine running rich. We measure backpressure and test the sensors before anyone spends converter money.

My exhaust rattles over bumps. Is that serious?

Usually not. A loose heat shield or a broken hanger makes exactly that noise, and both are inexpensive. It is still worth fixing, because a system hanging on fewer mounts puts strain on the joints that are left.

I can smell exhaust inside the car. Should I keep driving it?

Drive with the windows down and bring it in the same day. Exhaust in the cabin means a leak ahead of the passenger compartment, and that is carbon monoxide rather than a noise complaint.

Do you do exhaust work on trucks and 4x4s?

Yes. We weld and fabricate as well as fit direct-replacement parts, so we are not limited to what a parts catalog happens to list for your vehicle.

Our exhaust specialist will weld a section where a section is all that has failed, rather than quoting a whole system because that is the easier job to price.
