KRP Lodi is opening soon.
Volvos are built to last and to keep their owners safe, and many in New Jersey are on their second or third hundred thousand miles. KRP services every Volvo, from the XC90, XC60 and XC40 to older five-cylinder S60s and XC70s.
Volvo has gone through two very different engine families in the last twenty years: the long-running five-cylinder and six-cylinder engines in older models, and the 2.0-liter Drive-E four-cylinder, turbocharged and sometimes supercharged, in everything since the mid-2010s. Knowing which you have tells us most of what to check.
The XC90 in the photo is a regular at our Clifton shop. Here are the symptoms Volvo owners bring us most often.
Each one is diagnosed properly before we recommend a repair. None of them is guaranteed to happen to your car.
| What you notice | What it often points to | Where we start |
|---|---|---|
| Oil level dropping between changes on a 2.0 four-cylinder | Some Drive-E engines are known to use oil. We measure consumption over an interval before recommending anything. | Oil changes |
| Oil leaks, whistling or a rough idle on an older five-cylinder | The crankcase ventilation (PCV) system clogs with age and pushes oil past the seals. | Engine repair |
| Shudder or binding from all-wheel drive in tight turns | The AWD coupling has its own fluid and filter service that is easy to miss. | Drivetrain and differential |
| Coolant smell or a low coolant warning | The plastic expansion tank and hoses crack with heat cycles. | Cooling system |
| Harsh or delayed shifts | Fluid condition and shift adaptation, especially on older automatics. | Transmission service |
| Rear brake job needed on a car with an electric parking brake | The rear calipers must be retracted with a scan tool before pads are replaced. | Brake repair |
Less than many European brands if it is kept on schedule. The expensive Volvos are usually the ones where an inexpensive item, such as the ventilation system or the AWD fluid, was skipped for years.
No. Scheduled maintenance at an independent shop keeps the warranty valid as long as it follows Volvo's schedule and you keep records.
It vents pressure from inside the engine. When it clogs, pressure builds and pushes oil out through seals and gaskets. Replacing it often stops leaks that look much worse than they are. See engine repair.
Most repairs at KRP Automotive are guaranteed for as long as you own your vehicle. If you pay for a repair at our shop, you shouldn’t have to pay for it again, that’s our promise at all four open New Jersey locations.
