TDI Service From Technicians Who Know These Engines

Volkswagen's TDI engines are durable but particular: the right oil, the right fuel and a timing belt changed on schedule decide how long they last. After the 2016 emissions settlement, many TDIs received an approved emissions modification, and the cars still on the road deserve the same careful maintenance as ever.

For the rest of the car, see our Volkswagen and Audi pages. Here is our TDI checklist.

Our TDI Service Checklist

The items that matter most on a Volkswagen or Audi diesel.

  • Timing belt and water pump. TDI engines use a timing belt with a firm replacement interval. Missing it risks the engine. See engine repair.
  • Diesel-approved oil. TDIs need oil that meets Volkswagen's diesel specification. Ordinary oil is not a substitute. See oil changes.
  • High-pressure fuel pump health. The 2.0 common-rail TDI's fuel pump is sensitive to fuel quality and to any gasoline in the tank.
  • Fuel filter. Changed on schedule, with clean diesel only.
  • EGR valve, cooler and intake carbon. Soot from the EGR system builds up in the intake over time and costs power and economy. See diagnostics.
  • Particulate filter and regeneration. Short trips prevent regeneration. We check soot load and sensors. See exhaust system.
  • DSG service. Cars with the DSG dual-clutch transmission need fluid and filter service at Volkswagen's interval. See transmission service.
  • Glow plugs and AdBlue on 3.0 TDIs. Cold starts depend on the glow plugs, and the 3.0 TDI's AdBlue (DEF) system needs its own attention.
Volkswagen TDI Questions

Volkswagen TDI Service FAQ

I put gasoline in my TDI by mistake. What should I do?

Do not start it, or turn it off right away. The tank and fuel system should be drained and flushed. Gasoline can damage the high-pressure fuel pump on common-rail TDIs.

What oil does my TDI need?

An oil that meets Volkswagen's diesel specification for your engine. We use the approved oil for your model.

When is the timing belt due on my TDI?

It depends on the engine and year. We check your car's schedule and history and tell you exactly where you stand.
