KRP Lodi is opening soon.
The Duramax has powered Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra heavy-duty pickups since 2001, and now half-ton trucks, SUVs and midsize pickups too. KRP services every Duramax across our North Jersey shops.
We handle the full range of diesel work on Duramax trucks: fuel filters and water separators, DEF and emissions systems, DPF and EGR service, injectors, turbochargers, glow plugs, cooling systems and the transmissions behind them, including the Allison automatics bolted behind them. For everything else on the truck, see our Chevrolet and GMC pages.
Each Duramax generation has its own known issues. The eighth character of your VIN identifies the engine, and the table below covers the symptoms we see most.
By generation, from the original LB7 to the current L5P and the smaller 3.0 and 2.8.
| What you notice | What it often points to | Where we start |
|---|---|---|
| Smoke, rough running or fuel in the oil on a 2001 to 2004 truck (LB7) | Injector failures are well documented on the LB7. | Engine repair |
| Running hot while towing on a 2004.5 to 2005 truck (LLY) | The LLY is known to run hot under heavy load. We check the fan clutch, radiator and charge-air cooler. | Cooling system |
| Metal in the fuel filter or a sudden no-start (LML, 2011 to 2016) | High-pressure fuel pump failure, often after water or contaminated fuel. | Diagnostics |
| Frequent regenerations, reduced power or DEF warnings | Particulate filter, DEF and NOx sensor faults on the LMM, LML and L5P. | Exhaust system |
| Harsh or flared shifts | Fluid condition and adaptation on the Allison six-speed or the ten-speed in newer trucks. | Transmission service |
| Service due on a half-ton 3.0 Duramax | This engine has a belt-driven oil pump with its own replacement interval in GM's schedule. | Engine repair |
The eighth character of the VIN identifies the engine, and the model year narrows it down. We can confirm it in seconds.
Yes. We service the fluid and filters on the Allison automatics and diagnose shift problems with a scan tool. See transmission service.
Yes. It uses the same kinds of emissions and fuel systems as the larger Duramax engines, on a smaller scale.
